The Issue Campaigns Director at the Alliance for Youth Action (along with our sister 501c3 organization the Alliance for Youth Organizing) will play an integral role in the Alliance’s issue campaigns work. Most of the focus will be on voting justice work which includes advancing voting reforms that expand the electorate and/or reinstate access to voting. However, this person will also work with our network and partners to support the development of additional issue campaigns on the state and local level. This is a full-time and exempt position and reports to the Director of Program and Partnerships.
About the Alliance For Youth Action
The Alliance convenes, supports, and scales a national network of youth-led, locally rooted organizations growing civic engagement and social justice coast to coast. We truly are a network “of young people, by young people, for all people.” In 2018, our affiliates and partners are ran massive voter registrations and get-out-the-vote drives, trained new young leaders, and led powerful campaigns to win on the progressive issues our generation cares about most. In 2019, that work will grow as organizations advocate in city councils, state houses, and on the federal level as well as mobilize their peers in local, off-year races. Our national team empowers this work by tracking down national resources for the network, building capacity for local groups, seeding new efforts, and coordinating national issue campaigns. And we’ll likely do it all while bringing our generation together while vibing to J.Cole’s and Janelle Monae’s albums.
Key responsibilities of this position include:
Voting Rights Issue Work – Leads organization’s Democracy Done Right issue campaign and supports network organizations in the development and implementation of statewide and local voting rights work. Represents organization in voting rights coalition spaces to ensure voices of young people and network organizations are represented.
Issue Campaign Support – Works with network organizations to develop issue specific campaign plans that advance issues on the state and local level that our network cares most about. Helps to connect network organizations to issue area experts.
Partnerships Support – Supports the Director of Program and Partnerships to build and maintain partnerships with national, state, and local organizations leading issue work that is relevant to the issue campaigns network organizations are currently running or would like to run.
Program Team Support – Will play a key role in supporting the work of the program team through involvement in capacity building efforts, the national Alliance conference, and national issue campaigns.
Key Qualifications & Experience
We’re looking for candidates with particular strengths in the following areas:
Voting rights expertise – Prior experience working on efforts to expand the electorate, reinstate voting rights, and/or make our democracy function in a healthy and just way is preferred. Examples can include, but are not limited to: automatic voter registration, pre-registration, rights restoration for individuals with felonies, work with election administrators, etc.
Issue campaign development and implementation – Prior experience developing and running successful issue campaigns on the local, state, or federal level required. Able to articulate variety of tactics and strategies to implement successful campaigns.
People & project management skills – Ability to manage multiple projects, plan backwards, anticipate obstacles, run a tight ship.
Racial justice analysis – Experience organizing colleagues, organizations, and/or movements centering racial justice and/or equity.
Communication skills – Written and verbal.
Collaboration skills – Track record of developing and maintaining trusting relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, an ability to meet people where they are, find common ground, and inspire collective action.
Partnership – Ability to build rapport with relevant voting rights (and other issue campaign) partners and coalitions.

- Compensation: $65,000 – $75,000 per year commensurate with experience.
