The Directors of Network Capacity at the Alliance for Youth Action (along with our sister 501c3 organization the Alliance for Youth Organizing) will play an integral role in the Alliance’s capacity building and electoral programming. This is an exciting time at the Alliance especially for the program team. We’re expanding and reshaping our program team to partner with and support our growing network in building and executing super bold plans in 2019, 2020, and beyond! Ideal candidates for this role should be excited about the responsibilities listed below, but also interested in working within an incredible team with diverse talents. We’re looking for enthusiasm for working in an innovative team structure and deep background in intersecting issue areas that matter to young folks. This is a full-time and exempt position based in our Washington, DC office, reporting to the Director of Program and Partnerships. The Alliance will likely hire two individuals working at this level as part of larger, highly coordinated program team.


About the Alliance For Youth Action

The Alliance convenes, supports, and scales a national network of youth-led, locally rooted organizations growing civic engagement and social justice coast to coast. We truly are a network “of young people, by young people, for all people.” In 2018, our affiliates and partners ran massive voter registrations and get-out-the-vote drives, trained new young leaders, and ran powerful campaigns to win on the progressive issues our generation cares about most. Our national team empowers this work by tracking down national resources for the network, building capacity for local groups, seeding new efforts, and coordinating national issue campaigns. And we’ll likely do it all while bringing our generation together while still finding time to enjoy and share the best memes and hang out with pups in the office.


Job Responsibilities

The Director of Network Capacity will coordinate with three other director level individuals to support Alliance affiliate needs while building issue area expertise and connecting national strategy dialogues to the field.

Key responsibilities of this position include:

Capacity Building

  • Provide coaching to affiliates to support proactive planning around staffing, board management, scaling, and more. Additionally, support organizational expansion, innovative program building, and any other immediate needs including crisis mitigation.
  • Lead regular communication with a subset of our network organizations, collect  capacity evaluation reports, the upkeep of affiliate resources, and utilization of external professional services provided by the Alliance.
  • Serve as liaison between our network and the rest of Alliance staff. Build expertise in supporting work in several states or across several strategy areas.

Electoral Engagement and Program Planning

  • Scale, build, and support electoral programs and issue advocacy campaigns within the Alliance’s network, specifically with state based affiliates and youth organizing partners.
  • Co-develop the Alliance’s programmatic goals, priority setting, and implementation.
  • Support network organizations to develop and meet programmatic goals through coaching and data/metrics tracking.

Issue Leadership

  • Working with the team and the Alliance network, identify and lead on one or more issue areas that matter deeply to young folks. The areas where this coordinating role and connection to national-level coalitions are needed may focus or shift over time as movements grow and develop.


Key Qualifications & Experience

We’re looking for candidates with particular strengths in the following areas:

Local organizing experience – Deep understanding of state and local grassroots and electoral organizing, track record of developing & implementing electoral campaigns, and ability to advise staff with campaign strategy/develop new ideas to maximize impact.

People & project management skills – Ability to manage multiple projects, plan backwards, anticipate obstacles, troubleshoot, and make smart judgement calls as needed. Previous staff management experience a plus.

Racial justice analysis – Experience organizing colleagues, organizations, and/or movements using a racial justice and/or equity lens.

Coalition and movement building experience – Background in creating, joining, or coordinating collaborative spaces with integrity, humility, and clear objectives, including for issue areas that are new to you, or framed in a way that is new for the movement.

Strong Interpersonal skills – Track record of developing and maintaining trusting relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, an ability to meet people where they are, find common ground, and inspire collective action.

Communication skills – Written and verbal.

Ability to Travel – Approximately 25% of this position may be spent on domestic travel.

Ballot measure campaigns – Prior experience running, working on, or supporting ballot measures on the statewide or local level.

Board and governance – Previous interactions with Board and/or other governing bodies in a lead or supporting role or serving on a governing body.

Staff transition – Experience leading or supporting staff transitions.

  • Compensation: $65,000 – $75,000 per year commensurate with experience.
